Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Barbara Jordan attended Wheatley High School, Houston ISD, before becoming the first Black woman to serve in the Texas Senate in 1966. Jordan was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’ 18th district in 1972. A lawyer, educator, and advocate, Jordan’s commitment to equality shaped legislation for the country and the state of Texas.
