VOICES FROM THE FIELD

Reaching Students and Families Through a Shared Culture

Early in her career as a high school Spanish teacher, Sabina Landeros sponsored a Hispanic student society on her campus. She began receiving questions from her female students about her career, college experiences, and cultural expectations of women and marriage.

Landeros shared her journey of becoming a teacher with her students. Inspired by her story, she received numerous requests from her students to call or meet with their parents. Landeros created a series of parent meetings to discuss their fears, joys, and concerns; to share knowledge and resources with one another; and to identify and remove barriers that might prevent a student from exploring a range of opportunities post high school graduation.

Watch this touching video to learn how Landeros, who is now the principal at Santa Fe Elementary in Cleburne ISD, used her background and experiences to empower Hispanic students and families on her former campus.
