Sophie Torres joined the Raise Your Hand Texas team in September 2020 as a Regional Advocacy Director, now serving the greater San Antonio and Coastal Bend areas. She previously served as vice president of policy and business advocacy for the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, where on behalf of 1,200 members she advocated for the growth of businesses through effective policy, while also finding ways to make a direct correlation between an equitable education system and workforce needs at all levels of government.
The importance of education was instilled in Sophie from a very young age, particularly from her parents – but perhaps most notably by her father who only had a 3rd grade education. He understood that educational attainment provided avenues to future economic success. Sophie became a first-generation college student and graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Spatial Science. While studying at Texas A&M, Sophie participated in an internship in the U.S. House of Representatives that changed her career path to one of advocacy and public policy. Before moving home to San Antonio, she served in the offices of Congressman Charlie Gonzalez and Congressman Pete Gallego.
